Screenwriting 101: A Fun, Accessible Introduction to Writing for Film & Television

Course Description: There are countless people who dream about writing a movie someday, but many never begin because screenwriting can seem intimidating, technical, or overly academic. This course is designed to remove that fear entirely. “Screenwriting 101” is a beginner-friendly adult workshop that introduces the fundamentals of cinematic storytelling in a relaxed, creative, and highly social environment. Rather than functioning like a traditional classroom, the course is built around discussion, movie clips, guided writing exercises, and collaborative feedback. The emphasis is on creativity, confidence, and learning by doing. This course is ideal for adults interested in creative writing, movie and television fans, beginners with no prior experience, and aspiring writers looking for a creative outlet. Participants will leave the workshop with a foundational understanding of screenplay structure, character development, dialogue, and visual storytelling — along with original material of their own.

About the Instructors: Felipe Machado is a screenwriter, director, and producer with 15+ years in Hollywood film and television development. He has worked directly with Tony and Ridley Scott, Sam Raimi, and Scott Beck & Bryan Woods on projects including The Martian, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ash vs Evil Dead, Don't Breathe, Crawl, 65, and Boy Kills World. An award-winning filmmaker, he has collaborated with RSA Films, Crypt TV, and Hoorae Media to develop original film and television projects. Ben Seccombe is a Beverly, MA-based screenwriter, director, and editor with fifteen years of professional experience in television, film, digital, and branded media. An MFA graduate of Columbia University's School of the Arts, Ben specializes in comedy and visual storytelling. His roots in comedy stretch back to performing stand-up in Chicago and interning at The Second City. He served as a Staff Writer on the Ben Stiller-produced Comedy Central series Big Time in Hollywood, FL, and has developed pilots and digital projects with production companies including Sacha Baron Cohen's Four by Two Films and Sarah Silverman's Jash. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America, West, and is represented by The Gersh Agency.

Ages: 15+

Take a step back from the business of everyday life and immerse yourself in the slow and rewarding practice of printmaking! In this 3-class course, participants will explore simple relief and reduction printmaking techniques, all using accessible materials and user-friendly, approachable methods. Through hands-on, playful projects, participants will learn how to communicate ideas and express themselves through printmaking, while embracing the unexpected marks, smudges, and blurs that come with the 1,000-year-old practice.

This class will emphasize creativity, curiosity, and the process over perfection. Participants will leave with a collection of their own unique prints, a deepened understanding of foundational printmaking skills, and a newfound appreciation for handmade print and design. If you have taken this class before and want to continue exploring the medium, returners are always welcome!

Instructor Bio: Owen Gaffney is a 24-year-old mixed media artist and Beverly native who loves helping students of all ages discover their confidence and creativity through art. With a degree in both Studio Art and Psychology from the College of The Holy Cross, Owen brings a strong understanding of form, composition, and technique in a variety of mediums. While teaching any introductory course, the goal for Owen is always to create a welcoming environment where students of all experience levels can freely explore their interests and passions. He is an artist and educator who believes that every artist has something unique to say, and he is dedicated to helping students express it, no matter the medium.

The first-ever Bev Rec Knockout Tournament was just a pipe dream... until NOW!

Come and compete against dozens? Hundreds? Thousands? Of your friends and neighbors in the ultimate game of knockout. Your favorite playground basketball game has just been a training ground leading to this.

One round.

One game. One winner. All ages.

The great thing about knockout is that age (either young or old) is not an advantage. If you’re young, rejoice in asserting yourself as the new generation. If you’re a fully grown adult, this may be the only competition in town where you can take pride in reasserting basketball dominance over kids. No shame.

This event is all about bringing our community together through a game everyone can play. To make it truly special, we need a mix of kids, teens, and adults on the court. Whether you're a seasoned player or just looking for some fun, everyone has a shot at glory!

Our goal is to create an event that gets the whole city talking. Invite your friends, challenge your family, spread the word, and help us make the inaugural Bev Rec Knockout Tournament an unforgettable day of competition, excitement, and community spirit.

Who will earn the bragging rights and be crowned the first-ever Bev Rec Knockout Champion?

🎟️ Everyone who preregisters will receive an exclusive 2026 Bev Rec Knockout Tournament sticker!
