FUNCTIONS & EVENTS

Nestled between Woodbury Cove and the Atlantic Ocean in Beverly, Massachusetts, this historic landmark is an increasingly popular choice for weddings, receptions, class reunions, corporate dinners, retreats and other special occasions. The Carriage House is also available as an alternate venue to the Garden at Lynch Park for your wedding ceremony in the event of inclement weather.

"Live in sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Located directly on the waterfront within the 16-acre Lynch Park, the Carriage House has access to two beaches, several large greens, a children's play structure, volleyball court, kayaking and paddleboarding instruction, an ice cream stand and an elaborate Italianate Garden with a tea house. The Carriage House itself maintains many of its original features, including natural bead board walls and original period lighting. Modern conveniences include a caterer's service area and accessible restroom.

HISTORY

The Carriage House was originally part of a grand estate constructed in the late 1800s and later served as the summer White House for President Taft. Robert and Marie Antoinette Evans were the last family to own the estate. Mr. Evans, a self-made man, earned two fortunes, the first as President of Uniroyal and the second in copper mining. Mr. and Mrs. Evans were avid horticulturalists and philanthropists. They made significant contributions to both the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Boston University.

The beautiful Italianate garden on the site was installed by Mrs. Evans with guidance from the architectural firm of Allen and Collins. It is built on several levels with the East-facing border offering expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean.

President Taft had stayed in a summer cottage on the property for several seasons but after Mr. Evans' death Mrs. Evans asked President Taft not to return and had the cottage cut in half and moved on a barge, across the harbor, to Marblehead.
